Spilly Walker for Dublin Fringe

Spilly Walker (aka David and his brother Robbie) have a gig coming up this Friday 16th September at The Workmans Club for the Absolut Fringe Festival called WILD COMBINATION.  Hot on the heels of a great gig at Electric Picnic (read bbc review here) it’s sure to be a stormer of a night.

Spilly are sharing the bill with TR One and AngkorWat, and the live sets will be followed by DJ sets from David Kitt & Broken Audio Movement.

While versed in the language of modernist electronic music, each provide tantalising glimpses into new worlds, demonstrating the vitality of electronic music well into the 21st century. Music for the head, heart and feet, be sure to bring your dancing shoes.

Doors from 7.30 til late, tickets €12

Red Bull Music Academy with B+ and OB (All City)

David is taking part in the Red Bull Music Academy Workshop in Dublin with B+ and OB (All City Records) on Sat 19th March in Block T, Smithfield.
You can reserve a place at the RBMA Workshop by emailing info@choicecuts.com or check out http://www.redbull.ie

Potential applicants (producers, instrumentalists, vocalists, and DJs) to the academy workshop will experience an evening where innovative musical figures share their own perspectives on life in the musical lane, offering advice and generally giving insight.

For his contribution David’s going to go through the story of a song from the moment of original inspiration through to writing and recording.  Joining him on the night will be Ex-RBMA participant, Olan O’Brien aka OB from All City Records. When Olan O’Brien (OB) and DJ Splyce opened All City in Dublin in 2001 to sell hip-hop tunes and graffiti supplies, O’Brien knew that he also wanted to start a label. A decade on, the shop is still thriving (unlike so many of its peers), and the All City record label is really going gangbusters.

If that wasn’t enough to whet your musical appetites, RBMA will also feature an exhibition of work from ex academy participant B+ (aka Brian Cross). Author of “Its Not about a Salary: Rap Race and Resistance in Los Angeles” Rolling Stone Music Book of the Year, the Limerick born photographer and painter will show an exhibition entitled GhostNotes: An exploration of the relationship of photography to music through 20 years of music photography, will run on both Saturday and Sunday (19th & 20th of March) which will be open to the public.

B+ will join the workshop as a speaker on Saturday evening, and he, along with David Kitt and other special guests, will play a special club night for Choice Cuts after the session in The Grand Social, 35 Lower Liffey Street. Doors 10pm, tickets €10.

deadly sound underground

Here’s a film clip that a great guy (Will McConnell) in Belfast recorded for the Bandwidth series while David was there for a gig earlier this year.  The clip is download-able from their site, and they do a whole series of these films which are well worth checking out.  They’re all very much of the moment, and he captures some very special performances.

Spilly goes to Cork…

Spilly Walker is in Cork tomorrow night (fri) as part of Donal Dineen’s Fresh Air Season.  Here’s a little taster of what to expect:

David and Robbie did an on-air session with Donal as part of the first Fresh Air in November last year, where they played Spilly tracks live and brought in some great tracks for Donal to play. You can get a list of the tracks they picked, and a link to listen back to the session, here>

The Cork gig is in a deadly venue for Triskel called the SubStation, being as how it’s an old ESB SubStation.  Kevin Blake is playing too, and Donal will be doing live visuals and DJing at the show. Tickets are €15/12 and available in advance (from Triskel), or on the door. Doors are 8pm, show at 8.30pm.

This will be the last chance to catch Spilly Walker live until the Autumn; Robbie’s away all summer….
